While she's best known for her 25 years at the Detroit Free Press, which included 16 years as a columnist, Susan earlier worked for the Associated Press in Lansing, Mich. and San Francisco, and at the San Jose Mercury News.

In 2006 Susan launched “Tell Susan Where to Go.” Accompanied by her husband, Larry Coppard, as photographer, she traveled Michigan meeting strangers and enjoying adventures recommended to her by readers, more than 3,000 of whom offered suggestions. The series took her to the top of the Mackinac Bridge and to the bottom of Lake Huron near Alpena where, in a wet suit, she explored an old shipwreck.

An anthology of her earlier work, “At Heart,” was published in 1996. It sold out, but is sometimes available used on Amazon or Alibris. To see readers' favorite columns, click here.

In 2018 she was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.

Susan's hometown is Detroit but she now lives in a village of about 500 people in northern Michigan, where she continues to write, edit, teach, speak and take on other projects. Among them is the gathering and writing of “Life Stories” for men and women who don’t want the tales of their lives to go untold.
